Man In Traffic

VANCOUVER, Wash. - Washington State Patrol troopers fired their tasers at a Vancouver man early Sunday morning. They believe it saved his life.

At about 1:30 a.m. dispatchers received 911 calls about a man staggering across the interstate bridge in the northbound lanes, the state patrol said. The subject was later identified as 24-year-old Michael Kaleta.

A trooper found Kaleta in the northbound lanes near Mill Plain. However, Kaleta jumped over the median, against the trooper’s orders, and ran across several lanes of traffic, almost getting hit by a car. The trooper fired his taser at Kaleta twice, but it was not effective, the state patrol said. Another trooper arrived on the scene, and also used his taser. It managed to knock down Kaleta before he crossed back into traffic. The troopers said Kaleta resisted, but they managed to get him handcuffed.

After being treated for minor injuries, Kaleta was booked into the Clark County jail on several charges, including resisting arrest.

Suicide Attempt

A woman is undergoing psychological evaluation at a local hospital after being tased by police at a psychological rehabilitation facility.

According to a lieutenant with the Corning Police Department, they were called the 178 Pine Street, also called the Victory House, just after 5 pm Tuesday for a report of a woman about to cause harm to herself. When they arrived, they say a female resident of the Victory House was in her room, holding a knife to her throat and screaming that she was about to kill herself.

Police say when they tried to calm the woman down, she lunged at one of the officers with the knife. That's when the officer used his taser to disarm her and knock her away. The woman was taken into custody, and escorted by ambulance to a local hospital.

Suicide Attempt

TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- Police used a Taser on a man who allegedly attempted to kill himself. Traverse City police officers went to a residence on the 200 block of East Eighth Street at about 3 a.m. Saturday after a man called 911 and said he planned to kill himself. The man told dispatchers he had a knife and no one could stop him from what he intended to do, according to a police statement.

Officers found the man seated in a chair holding a large knife to his chest. The man, 62, allegedly began to push the knife into his chest, so officers used a Taser to incapacitate him. The man was disarmed and taken into protective custody, according to the statement. He was admitted to Munson Medical Center for a psychological evaluation and treatment of a stab wound that was not life-threatening.

Man Firing Shots

A man who holed up in a Delta Junction gas station shot at state troopers to keep them at bay during an hours-long standoff that ended with the suspect safely taken into custody.

Francis White, 62, is accused of assault and other charges in the standoff that shut down the Richardson Highway and caused about $2,000 in damage, troopers said. No one was injured.A friend called troopers about White at about 9 a.m., saying he had gone to court and was acting irrationally. The friend was concerned White would hurt someone, troopers said. Troopers found White at the Texaco gas station and he ran inside carrying a shotgun and pistol, they said. The man ran into an occupied upstairs office and, troopers said, threatened to shoot the officer standing outside. The two people in the room ran out, leaving White to begin fortifying his position with file cabinets and furniture, troopers said.

Officers called for backup, and White began firing the shotgun out the window, troopers said. They counted nine blasts, though they weren't sure if they were aimed at particular targets.Meanwhile, more troopers -- including a Special Emergency Reaction Team, similar to SWAT -- were flown into the town of 1,000 about 95 miles southeast of Fairbanks.

Negotiators talked White out for food, and when he came out, shotgun slung on his back and pistol holstered, troopers saw a chance to Taser him and end the standoff. He was cuffed and booked at the Fairbanks Correctional Center on charges of assault, misconduct involving weapons and criminal mischief. According to court records, White's only prior criminal charge in Alaska was for taking caribou in a closed season.

Pit Bull Attack

Tallahassee Police say Officer Jon Schulze was on routine patrol near Micosukee Road and Martine Street when he was notified by a Tallahassee Democrat delivery driver that a pit bull was running around and appeared aggressive. Schulze located the dog nearby. The dog began to growl at the officer as he stood behind his patrol vehicle.

Police say the dog then ran toward the officer, while growling and appeared he would bite the officer. Schulze avoided the attack by deploying his Taser. The Taser application was successful and the dog ran away.

Officers were unable to locate the dog after the incident. Citizens in the area are asked to use caution and contact the Tallahassee Police Department if confronted by the animal at 850-891-4200.

Man With A Meat Cleaver

The same night police were forced to use deadly force in an apparent domestic dispute, circumstances allowed an officer in the city's northeast to successfully use a Taser to disarm a man threatening to kill his common-law wife.

Witnesses called police just before 7 p.m. after seeing a man inside a home on 38 St. N.E. threatening to kill a woman in a bedroom. Police arrived and quickly determined a woman's life was at risk, said Sgt. Mike Lomore. Through a bedroom window where the blinds were broken, they were able to see a suspect armed with a meat cleaver threatening a woman up against a wall. Officers broke a window on the door to get into the home.

Once inside the suspect "was using her as a shield and then turned towards us," Lomore said. "She was very distraught," he said, adding the woman managed to avoid injury by pressing the assailant's weapon-wielding arm against the wall. Five officers were on scene with police-issue firearms drawn as the man, who initially threatened to kill the woman, then urged police officers to end his life. "Officers had their weapons drawn when an opportunity presented itself," Lomore said.

The sergeant was able to target several inches exposed between the suspect's armpit and waistband with his Taser. "I deployed, and it was over instantly," he said.

"If there is ever a deadly force situation -- this was it. It's fortunate we had a Taser and it resolved the situation without deadly force."

The man, who appeared to be intoxicated by drugs and is said to be in his 50s, was incapacitated and taken to hospital for precautionary reasons. The suspect is facing charges of unlawful confinement, assault with a weapon and threats to kill.
